Auckland 2016: Preview and Predictions

This is the other international that is going on this week its headlined by last year’s finalist Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki and the 2014 champion Ana Ivanovic with the remainder of the seeds coming from the top 45. The rest of the field is made up of Top 80 and is a strong one for an international tournament.

Quarter 1 V.Williams (1) v Strycova (7)

Defending champion Venus Williams opens against Kasatkina. Venus had a good year last year making it back into the top 10 for the first time in 4 years, made the quarters of two grand slams and won 3 tournaments. Kasatkina spent most of the year playing in ITF Tournaments but she did make an impact at a few WTA tournaments including making the semis of Moscow as a qualifier and the 3rd round of the US Open. Strycova who is defending semi-finalist points opens up against a qualifier who probably won’t be a problem. In the other matches Goerges takes on Hradecka. Goerges is defending quarter final points here and also beat Hradecka here last year. Also Hibino takes on Duque-Marino.

V.Williams df Strycova (I can’t decide between her or Goerges)

Quarter 2 Kuznetsova (4) v Vandeweghe (6)

Kuznetsova opens up against Barthel neither of them could post good back to back results but of the two Kuznetsova had the better year making the final of Madrid and winning in Moscow whereas Mona lost both of the finals that she played in. Vandeweghe will open up against fellow American Irina Falconi. Vandeweghe started last year well reaching the quarters of Auckland and the 3rd round of the Australian Open. She then followed this up with a good grass court season and then making the quarters of Wuhan. Whereas Falconi season last year was nowhere near as good only making it as far as the quarters once. The other players in this quarter are Mattek-Sands and Schiavone who both open us against qualifiers.

Kuznetsova df Mattek-Sands

Quarter 3 Wozniacki (3) v Van Uytvanck (8)

Wozniacki plays her first match against Kovinic. Caroline season was good she strung together good results but it was the Grand Slams that let her down the furthest she got was the 4th round at Wimbledon. It seems that at the end of the year she was struggling with something as this was when her form left and she ended the season outside the top for the first time since 2008. Kovinic has played mostly at ITF level but when she ventured into WTA tournaments for the most part she posted good results. Van Uytvanck plays Dulgheru in her opening match she had some good results last year including making the quarters of the French Open. The other matches in this quarter are Putintseva against Erakovic and Doi against Mchale.

Wozniacki df Putintseva

Quarter 4 Ivanovic (2) v Stephens (5)

In her first match Ana takes on qualifier which hopefully won’t be a problem for her. During her season last year she did post some good results including a run to the semi-finals at Roland Garros, but it didn’t live up to 2014 season hopefully she can have a deep run to kick start her season. Stephens opens up against Hercog who ended her season early in September but did post some good results during the year. Stephens had a good where she won her first title. The other matches in this quarter are Witthoeft against Maria and Larsson against Ostapenko.

Ivanovic df Stephens
